Physical Therapy Q&A
What is physical therapy?
Physical therapy uses cutting-edge technology and techniques to strengthen injured tissues, speed up healing, and reduce pain. During the course of physical therapy sessions, the TLC Physical Therapy team uses Keiser® exercise equipment, along with flexibility training, balance training, and therapeutic massage to relieve pain.
What are the benefits of physical therapy?
Some benefits you may find by choosing treatment include:
- Increased strength
- Faster healing
- Improved flexibility
- Less pain
- Lower risk of further injury
- Reduced need for surgery
Physical therapy is a holistic, conservative treatment that often reduces the need for invasive procedures and pain medication.
TLC Physical Therapy provides experienced therapists who offer attentive, exceptional care. They are well-equipped to use modern equipment at their five convenient offices throughout greater New York City and New Jersey.
Is physical therapy right for me?
To find out if physical therapy is right for you, your provider discusses your medical history, lifestyle, and symptoms with you. Then, they check your vital signs and complete a physical exam. They may also recommend that you undergo blood tests or an imaging procedure like X-rays, an ultrasound, an MRI, or a CT scan. In some cases, they conduct nerve tests as well.
Physical therapy can be an effective treatment if you struggle with:
- Other chronic diseases
- Sports injuries
- Recovery after surgery
- Workplace injuries
- Car-accident injuries
- Other traumatic injuries
- Age-related wear-and-tear
Your provider could recommend physical therapy as part of a rehabilitation treatment plan. You might need therapy in addition to other treatments, like lifestyle changes, medications, injections, and/or surgery.
What should I expect during physical therapy sessions?
Follow your therapist’s instructions. You may use resistance bands, free weights, cardiovascular machines, and/or balance equipment as your provider assists you with flexibility and strength workouts during each session. They also let you know which exercises to complete at home during each therapy session.
Attend physical therapy or massage therapy sessions as directed by your provider. They might ask you to come to the office several times a week or once a week at first. You’ll go to therapy less often as your body heals.
